History of Metamorphic Technique

Robert St. John

Robert St JohnAlthough Metamorphosis is an attitude of mind and very simple to use, we have been indoctrinated over the centuries by structures of thought in religion, philosophy and education in such a way that our ability to think and function from the level of thought is tied to these same structures and we are not free to "think" from our own inner intelligence. We need some ritual to "unthink" this structure. That, in principle, is what Metamorphosis is. What physical practice there is in Metamorphosis is a symbol for the mind to change all of the indoctrination of the past and to "be come" the present."
- Robert St. John

Robert St. John was a British Naturopath and reflexologist who, in the 1960's whilst working on the spinal reflexes of the feet, realized that certain areas corresponded with psychological and physical memories from the prenatal period. What he realized was that by releasing disharmonies in the spine he was also releasing disharmonies from the prenatal period.

Robert St. JohnThis led him to realize that everyone has their own capacity for self-healing, not only physical changes but also changes in attitude and state of mind.

It was as a Naturopath that he noticed that even though symptoms might be removed, new ones would often surface in their place because the underlying symptoms quite often stem from stresses developed in the womb. Now he saw that changes were occuring from entirely within the patients themselves. He called this work Metamorphosis.

Gaston St. Pierre

Gaston St. Pierre founder of the Metamorphic AssociationGaston St. Pierre founded The Metamorphic Association in 1979 and it became a charitable educational Trust in 1983. Registered Charity No: 326525. Its aim is to promote the good physical and mental health of the public by the provision of education and training in the theory and practice of a form of healing and personal development known as the Metamorphic Technique.

Gaston who studied extensively with Robert St. John during the 1970's, saw the potential for the development of a practical tool for self-healing and the realization of one's potential that could be easily integrated into everyday life. He therefore went on to further develop the work and created the term Metamorphic Technique to differentiate the new direction the work was now taking.

"In my work, I come across many instances of self-inflicted restrictions. And once we accept limitations on ourselves, we constrain those close to us. As far as I have been able to discover, however, there are no real limits to the consciousness of any human being, including those with, so-called "learning difficulties". But as long as we persist with our own particular learning difficulties, we will feel restricted. This feeling of constraint is inevitable, but transient and illusory. We impose it on ourselves and we can dissolve it ourselves."
